Voice over IP (VOIP)- FAQ

iamge

Can one operate Sonic ISDN VoIP gateways at a standard DSL connection? In principle yes but you have to note that the down/Upstream bandwidth must be large enough.

Note: The Sonic ISDN-VoIP-Gateways do not contain a DSL-MODEM. Without Voice-compression you need per ISDN-channel a Down-/Upstream-Bandwidth of circa 10 Kbyte/s, which means one ISDN-BRI-Port needs therefore a Down-/Upstream-Bandwidth of circa 20 Kbyte/s per channel. This corresponds to a necessary Down-/Upstream-Bandwidth of minimum circa 160 kbit/s per channel. EG.: DSL-Connection: DSL 1000 with 1.024 kbit/s (128 kbyte/s) Downstream and 128 kbit/s (16 Kbyte/s) Upstream can support circa 1/2 x ISDN-BRI (without compression).

Do one need a fixed IP-address? No.
You neeed a VoIP-provider with STUN-Service (Simple Transversal of UDP through NATs) or an extra STUN-Service only.

Can one operate Sonic ISDN-VoIP-Gateways at an Internet/LAN/WAN with NAT (Network address translation)? NAT is fully supported.

Can one operate Sonic ISDN-BRI-VoIP-Gateways at PtP(Point to point)- or PtMP (Point to multipoint)-connectors points? ISDN-BRI-PtP(Point to point)- or PtMP (Point to multipoint)-connectors points are supported.

Can one substitute with Sonic ISDN-VoIP-Gateways the whole telephone landline?

In principle yes but you need the necessary Internet/LAN/WAN-bandwidth, to route all wished ISDN-calls via IP and sometimes (depending on the used provider) there are no emergency calls possible.

Example:
ADC341 is able to substitute a 4 x BRI ISDN-connection -> The necessary Internet/LAN/WAN-bandwidth is min. circa 640 kbit/s = 80 kbyte/s (per Down-/Upstream). With compression analogous less. Additionally you have to keep in mind, that the used VoIP-provider must not support all telephone features like e.g. emergency calls etc.

Do the Sonic ISDN- VoIP-Gateways operate with H.323? No.
All Sonic ISDN-VoIP-Gateways support the SIP protocol (Session Initiation Protocol)!

Do Sonic ISDN-VoIP-Gateways deal with incomming SIP-VoIP-calls with URI as "Called Number"?

Yes.
If wished these signalization can be normalized into a configured ISDN number or automatically into a 0 or it can be exchanged by a modified ISDN number. Thus VoIP calls can be passed on smoothly to subscriber numbers of the attached PBX.

Example:
Call for fluffy@example.com will be exchanged into the ISDN-calling number 0 so the PBX can route this call to the central telephone.
